Beautiful Concord Stagecoach

Apr 13th, 2008 | By admin | Category: Object of the Week

This coach, that is up for auction on ebay this week, has been fully renovated to it’s believed original state and character.  It has a standard 9 passenger “inside” and room for four on front including driver and shotgun. The front wheels are 44in. and the back are 55in. in diameter. The track of the gear is very wide and is approx. 66″in. and 53″in. between skeins.  Has nice leather through bracing, strapping, etc. Seats are made of true 3-4 oz. stamped leather and professionally stretched, hand stained, polished etc. “not vinyl.”

This coach was retrieved from a New Hampshire barn about a year ago. The running gear is stamped R No. 4 on the front axle and W.T. or W.F. EDEN on the arched top hound plate. I believe the No. 4 mark might mean it is the 4th coach made of this type or of all Concord Coach’s, and W.T. or W.F. EDEN is the black smiths mark, name of coach or possibly the town or route it ran.  The axels on this coach are hand forged originals that were welded by hammer and borax. This could possibly be one of the earliest known coaches in existence.
